Awards Ceremony for the 32nd Ehime Shimbun Primary School Book Report Contest Held

2020.12.11

On Sunday, November 29th, the awards ceremony for the 32nd Ehime Shimbun Primary School Book Report Contest, for which Taiyo Oil is a special cosponsor, was held at a hotel in Matsuyama City, Ehime.

The contest is sponsored by the Ehime Shimbun to assist in Japanese language education in primary schools with the support of Ehime Prefecture and the Ehime Board of Education, and a large number of primary schools and individuals located within the prefecture submit reports every year. This year, a total of thirty-six reports were selected from approximately 15,000 submitted for awards, consisting of one top prize, five special prizes, twelve excellence prizes, and eighteen honorable mention awards.

The contest's top prize, the Taiyo Oil SOLATO Award, was presented to Yuu Takada, a fifth grader from the Matsuyama Municipal Misake Primary School, for his report on "Kyo Ware Ikite Ari: Chiran Tokubetsu Kogekitai-in Tachi no Kiseki" (We Live Today: Tracing the Chiran Special Attack Commandos) (by Jiro Kosaka). Yuu wrote about realizing how much he appreciated peace after thinking about the special commandos he read about in the book while observing one minute’s silence on the anniversary of the end of the war.

In order to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus throughout the venue, masks had to be worn at all times, except for when photographs were taken, in addition to maintaining distance between seats, ensuring that everybody sterilized their hands and taking temperatures, etc., which resulted in a vastly different event to normal years, although the children who received awards had an extremely enjoyable day that is sure to live forever within their memories.

Taiyo Oil will continue to support projects that aim to raise upstanding leaders for the future as part of its CSR activities in Ehime Prefecture, where the company’s Shikoku Operations is located.
